Aftenposten is Norway's second largest newspaper with a circulation of 256,600 copies for the morning edition, 155,400 copies for the evening edition and 232,900 copies for the Sunday edition in 2003. It is generally considered the leading serious Norwegian newspaper.

Aftenposten is published in Riksmål, or Traditional Standard Norwegian, an unofficial but widely used conservative form of the Norwegian language.

The online version of the paper has a large English section, and is the number one source for Norwegian news in English. Aftenposten has approximately 1,330 employees.

Traditionally, Aftenposten has been a broadsheet paper in its editorial format, but was converted to tabloid format in the beginning of 2005.

Aftenposten was founded by Christian Schibsted May 14, 1860 under the name "Christiania Adresseblad". The year after it got the name Aftenposten. From 1885 the paper got two daily editions and the Sunday edition was introduced in 1990.

Historically, Aftenposten labelled itself as "independent, conservative," most closely aligning their editorial platform to the Norwegian Conservative Party, Høyre. This manifested itself in blunt anti-communist opinions during the time between the two world wars. Before and during the Second World War the newspaper had clear fascist sympathies. It was in Aftenposten Knut Hamsun's infamous eulogy over Adolf Hitler was printed, on May 7, 1945.

The newspaper has traditionally been fiercely anti-communist and during the Cold War strongly pro-American. In the last few years, Aftenposten's editorial platform has moved further to the left. It has become generally critic of the state of Israel and has been criticizing economic policy of the conservative government as well as the war against Iraq. In 2005 it campaigned against the conservative candidate to become new bishop of Oslo, because he (as well as the Norwegian State Church) would not accept homosexual priests. CEO of Aftenposten AS is Olav Martin Mugaas, former member of AKP-ml (Workers Communist Party Marxist-Leninism), chief editor for the evening edition is Hilde Haugsgjerd, also former member of AKP-ml and former editor of the paper Dagsavisen. Aftenposten is a private company owned 100% by Schibsted ASA.
