Alden is a town located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,470.

History

The Town of Alden was incorporated in 1823, and contains a village also called Alden. The town was formed from the Town of Clarence. Part of the town was given up to form the Town of Marilla. The first settlers arrived in Alden around 1810 and the first school opened in 1815.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 89.4 km² (34.5 mi²). 89.3 km² (34.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water. Ellicott Creek flows through the town.

Alden in on the eastern border of the county, adjacent to Genesee County.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,470 people, 3,278 households, and 2,484 families residing in the town. The population density is 117.3/km² (303.9/mi²). There are 3,398 housing units at an average density of 38.1/km² (98.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.96% White, 6.77% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.43% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 2.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,278 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.3% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 119.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,472, and the median income for a family is $53,969. Males have a median income of $32,458 versus $26,302 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,698. 5.9% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Alden - the Village of Alden.
  • Alden Center-- located at Westwood Road and Sandridge Road.
  • Alden Station -- A location between Alden village and Crittenden.
  • Crittenden -- A hamlet at Genesee Street (Route 33) and Crittenden Road. Many businesses are located around this important intersection.
  • Dellwood -- A location on the western town line.
  • Mill Grove -- A small hamlet of several businesses and many residences around the intersection of Genesee Street (Route 33) and Milgrove Road. Many of the original businesses have been closed or converted to others uses.
  • Peters Corners -- A location at the intersection of Genesee Street (Route 33), and South Newstead Road, composed of a few scattered residences.
  • Town Line -- a location on the western town line.
  • Town Line Station -- A location at the western town line, bordering the Town of Lancaster. It is north of Town Line.
  • Wende -- A region in the northwest corner of the town, where several public institutions are located.
  • West Alden -- A location at the intersection of Broadway and Sandridge Road, west of the village of Alden.

Information about Alden

The Erie County Home, the Erie County Correctional Facility, and Wende State Correctional Facility are located in the northwest part of the Town of Alden, which is known as Wende.
