Allegany (town), New York

Allegany is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,230.

The Town of Allegany (once called Burton) was incorporated in 1831. There is a village called Allegany inside this town. The town is on the south border of the county, west of the City of Olean.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 185.6 km² (71.7 mi²). 184.3 km² (71.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

The Allegheny River flows throught the town. The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes across the town.

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,230 people, 2,599 households, and 1,764 families residing in the town. The population density is 44.6/km² (115.6/mi²). There are 2,862 housing units at an average density of 15.5/km² (40.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.40% White, 0.79% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,599 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 26.6% from 18 to 24, 19.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,818, and the median income for a family is $45,972. Males have a median income of $36,801 versus $24,420 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,667. 8.6% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Nichols Run -- A hamlet on Route 45 by the south town line near Harrisburg and Knapp Creek.
  • Rock City -- A location west of Four Mile on Route 16.
  • St. Bonaventure University -- A college south of Allegany village.

Adjacent towns and areas

The south border of Allegany is McKean County, Pennsylvania. The Towns of Hinsdale and Olean form the east boundary. Allegany shares its north boundary with the Town of Humphrey and its west boundary with the Towns of Great Valley and Carrollton.
