Altavista is a town located in Campbell County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,425.

The racial makeup of the town is 74.25% White, 24.55% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,502 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% are married couples living together, 16.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
