Atchison County (standard abbreviation: AT) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 16,774. The largest city and county seat is Atchison.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,127 km² (435 mi²). 1,120 km² (432 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 16,774 people, 6,275 households, and 4,279 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 6,818 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.62% White, 5.32% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. 1.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,275 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,355, and the median income for a family is $40,614. Males have a median income of $29,481 versus $20,485 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,207. 13.30% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 17.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
