Barnwell County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. Its county seat is Barnwell6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,443 km² (557 mi²). 1,420 km² (548 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.59% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,478 people, 9,021 households, and 6,431 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 10,191 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.18% White, 42.55% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,021 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are married couples living together, 19.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,591, and the median income for a family is $35,866. Males have a median income of $31,161 versus $21,904 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,870. 20.90% of the population and 17.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.30% of those under the age of 18 and 24.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
