Battlement Mesa, Colorado

Battlement Mesa is a census-designated place located in Garfield County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,497. The town, which bills itself as a "covenant-protected community", is a primarily a group of contiguous subdivisions developed in the later decades of the 20th century, catering to families and retirees. It is located on the flank of a hill on the south side of Interstate 70 across from the older town of Parachute. The two communities together are known as "Parachute-Battlement Mesa". The town takes its name from Battlement Mesa, a basalt-topped mesa that sits to the south of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 21.6 km² (8.3 mi²). 20.9 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.12% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,497 people, 1,476 households, and 1,031 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 167.3/km² (433.3/mi²). There are 1,631 housing units at an average density of 78.0/km² (202.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 94.94% White, 0.40% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 2.00% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 7.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,476 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $36,680, and the median income for a family is $42,331. Males have a median income of $31,924 versus $21,798 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $18,653. 6.0% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
