Benton, Wisconsin

Benton is a village located in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 976. The village is located within the Town of Benton.

The pioneer priest Father Samuel Mazzuchelli founded the village's Catholic parish, Saint Patrick's Church. Father Mazzuchelli is buried in Saint Patrick's cemetery. He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1993, and the case for his Sainthood is still pending.

Geography

Benton is located at 42°34'15" North, 90°23'3" West (42.570836, -90.38437)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 976 people, 393 households, and 260 families residing in the village. The population density is 454.0/km² (1,170.2/mi²). There are 417 housing units at an average density of 194.0/km² (500.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.36% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 393 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the village the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $30,313, and the median income for a family is $41,518. Males have a median income of $28,882 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,702. 7.5% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.1% of those under the age of 18 and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
