Berkeley County is a county in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 142,651. Its county seat is Moncks Corner6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,181 km² (1,228 mi²). 2,843 km² (1,098 mi²) of it is land and 338 km² (130 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.61% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 142,651 people, 49,922 households, and 37,691 families residing in the county. The population density is 50/km² (130/mi²). There are 54,717 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (50/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.00% White, 26.63% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.87% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 2.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 49,922 households out of which 39.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 14.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.50% are non-families. 19.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 7.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 103.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,908, and the median income for a family is $44,242. Males have a median income of $31,583 versus $22,420 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,879. 11.80% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.60% of those under the age of 18 and 12.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
