Brunswick County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 73,143. Its county seat is Bolivia6.

History

The county was formed in 1764 from parts of Bladen County and New Hanover County. It was named for the (now abandoned) colonial port of Brunswick, which was itself named for Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg; at the time held by the British kings of the House of Hanover.

Law and government

Brunswick County is a member of the regional Cape Fear Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,720 km² (1,050 mi²). 2,214 km² (855 mi²) of it is land and 506 km² (195 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.59% water.

Townships

The county is divided into six townships: Lockwoods Folly, Northwest, Shallotte, Smithville, Town Creek, and Waccamaw.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 73,143 people, 30,438 households, and 22,037 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 51,431 housing units at an average density of 23/km² (60/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.30% White, 14.38% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,438 households out of which 25.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.76.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 29.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,888, and the median income for a family is $42,037. Males have a median income of $30,138 versus $22,066 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,857. 12.60% of the population and 9.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
