Butterfree (バタフリー Batafurī) is a fictional Pokémon character. The name is Batafurii in Romaji Japanese and is a Stage 2 bug-type Pokémon that evolves from Metapod at level 10. Butterfree's wings are covered with poisonous, water-repellent dust; this allows it to fly when it rains, and also enables it to attack enemies by flapping its wings at high speeds to release the poisonous powder. Butterfree survives by collecting honey from flowers, which it carries on the hairs on its legs, and it has the ability to identify even distant flowers in bloom.

Butterfree is very useful not only because it can learn psychic-type attacks, but also because it learns to use a wide variety of status-effect powders (such as Sleep Powder and Poison Powder).

Anime Appearances

In episode 4, Challenge of the Samurai, Ash's then-Caterpie evolved into a Metapod, and by the end of the episode, had somehow gained enough experience to evolve into a Butterfree, saving Ash and his friends from a swarm of Beedrill. Butterfree was used quite often in battle, often for its status-affecting powders.

In episode 20 (21 in the original Japanese run), Bye Bye Butterfree, Ash's Butterfree falls in love with a pink wild Butterfree during the Butterfree mating season. In its best interests, Ash releases his Butterfree. Many people believe that Butterfree die after mating, thanks to a fan's mistranslation of the Japanese version of the episode; nowhere in the episode, however, is this ever stated.
