Calabasas, California

Calabasas is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, in the western United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,033. The city was formally incorporated in 1991. Many parts of Calabasas are mountains or hills, which have spectacular views of the San Fernando Valley.

The city is located at the southwestern edge of the San Fernando Valley and comprises a portion of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is bordered by the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles to the northeast, Topanga to the southeast, Malibu to the south, Agoura Hills to the west, and Hidden Hills to the north. The historic El Camino Real runs east-west through Calabasas as Highway 101.

Calabasas is famous for giving rise to alt rock phenomenon Incubus.

Geography

Calabasas is located at 34°8'18" North, 118°39'39" West (34.138363, -118.660917)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.1 km² (13.1 mi²). 33.9 km² (13.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,033 people, 7,229 households, and 5,544 families residing in the city. The population density is 590.4/km² (1,528.8/mi²). There are 7,426 housing units at an average density of 218.9/km² (566.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.92% White, 1.18% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 7.71% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 2.71% from two or more races. 4.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,229 households out of which 43.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.3% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $93,860, and the median income for a family is $107,330. Males have a median income of $87,049 versus $46,403 for females. The per capita income for the city is $48,189. 3.3% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
