Carrollton, Georgia

Carrollton is a city located in Carroll County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,843. Census Estimates of 2003 indicate a population of 20,615. The city is the county seat of Carroll CountyTemplate:GR.

The Sacred Harp Publishing Company and Sacred Harp Museum are located in Carrollton.

Carrollton is also the home of the University of West Georgia (External Link (http://www.westga.edu)).

Geography

Carrollton is located at 33°34'51" North, 85°4'36" West (33.580912, -85.076704)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 53.6 km² (20.7 mi²). 52.2 km² (20.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.51% water.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 19,843 people, 7,121 households, and 3,966 families residing in the city. The population density is 379.8/km² (983.7/mi²). There are 7,577 housing units at an average density of 145.0/km² (375.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 62.49% White, 31.16% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.88% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 5.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,121 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.0% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.3% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 27.0% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 15.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,559, and the median income for a family is $39,143. Males have a median income of $30,600 versus $23,224 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,803. 23.4% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.7% of those under the age of 18 and 17.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
