Carthage is a town located in Moore County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,871. It is the county seat of Moore CountyTemplate:GR.

Carthage is located at 35°19'46" North, 79°24'31" West (35.329441, -79.408475)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.1 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,871 people, 653 households, and 440 families residing in the town. The population density is 124.1/km² (321.3/mi²). There are 768 housing units at an average density of 50.9/km² (131.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 67.72% White, 30.84% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 653 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,050, and the median income for a family is $43,594. Males have a median income of $32,305 versus $23,603 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,343. 14.7% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.4% of those under the age of 18 and 33.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
