Chester, Virginia

Chester is a census-designated place located in Chesterfield County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 17,890.

Chester's original "downtown" was is defined by being a stop on the Richmond and Petersburg railroad. The Chester Station was destroyed during the American Civil War. Chester today is a bedroom community along Route 10. Recent commercial development in Chester has emerged at the sprawling intersection of Virginia State Highway 10 and the U.S. Highway 1(Jefferson Davis Highway)near the on-ramp to Interstate 95.

Chester is served by Thomas Dale High School, L.C. Bird High School, and Chester Middle School.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 34.0 km² (13.1 mi²). 33.6 km² (13.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,890 people, 6,727 households, and 5,119 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 531.7/km² (1,377.1/mi²). There are 6,951 housing units at an average density of 206.6/km² (535.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 81.28% White, 13.43% African American, 0.44% Native American, 2.16% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.05% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 3.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,727 households out of which 40.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $53,171, and the median income for a family is $60,632. Males have a median income of $44,167 versus $30,295 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $23,258. 8.0% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
