Clifton is a city located in Wayne County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,699.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²). 16.6 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.75% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,699 people, 353 households, and 223 families residing in the city. The population density is 162.3/km² (420.1/mi²). There are 392 housing units at an average density of 23.6/km² (61.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.69% White, 39.42% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 353 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 7.0% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 56.2% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 561.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 684.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,500, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $36,848 versus $19,318 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,780. 22.0% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
