Coachella, California

Coachella is a city located in Riverside County, California; it is the easternmost city in the region collectively known as the Palm Springs area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,724.

The film director Frank Capra is interred in the Coachella Valley Cemetery in Coachella.

Geography

Coachella is located at 33°40'46" North, 116°10'28" West (33.679522, -116.174488)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 53.9 km² (20.8 mi²). 53.9 km² (20.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 22,724 people, 4,807 households, and 4,480 families residing in the city. The population density is 421.4/km² (1,091.4/mi²). There are 5,024 housing units at an average density of 93.2/km² (241.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 38.77% White, 0.45% Black or African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 56.57% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. 97.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,807 households out of which 65.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.5% are married couples living together, 19.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 6.8% are non-families. 5.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.72 and the average family size is 4.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 40.8% under the age of 18, 12.7% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 12.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,590, and the median income for a family is $28,320. Males have a median income of $23,044 versus $15,550 for females. The per capita income for the city is $7,416. 28.9% of the population and 29.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.3% of those under the age of 18 and 25.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Coachella is also a shorthand reference to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held in nearby Indio, California.
