Coconino County, Arizona

Coconino County is located in the north central part of the state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 116,320. The county seat is Flagstaff.

Coconino County contains parts of the Navajo Nation Reservation, Hopi, and Grand Canyon National Park.

Coconino County was the setting for George Herriman's early 20th century Krazy Kat comic strip.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 48,332 km² (18,661 mi²). 48,219 km² (18,617 mi²) of it is land and 113 km² (44 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water. It is therefore physically larger than Denmark, which has a population of almost six million people.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 116,320 people, 40,448 households, and 26,938 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 53,443 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.09% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 28.51% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 4.13% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 10.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 40,448 households out of which 34.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 14.40% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 7.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,256, and the median income for a family is $45,873. Males have a median income of $32,226 versus $25,055 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,139. 18.20% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.30% of those under the age of 18 and 13.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
