Coldspring, New York

Coldspring is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 751.

The Town of Cold Spring was established in 1837. It is located in the southwest part of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 134.7 km² (52.0 mi²). 133.3 km² (51.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.

The south town line is the boundary of Pennsylvania, and the Allegheny River divides the town with its reservoir.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 751 people, 278 households, and 205 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.6/km² (14.6/mi²). There are 371 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.20% White, 0.27% African American, 1.60% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 278 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 18.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,063, and the median income for a family is $35,938. Males have a median income of $29,479 versus $16,458 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,568. 15.0% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Allegany Reservation -- A reservation of the Iroquois that is within part of the town.
  • Allegheny Reservoir -- An artificial lake created by a dam on the Allegheny River.
  • Allegany State Park -- A section of the park is in the southeast part of the town.
  • Price Corners -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 9 and 394 by the western town line.
  • Steamburg -- A hamlet located near the center of the town on Route 394. Steamburg is the major community in the town and the seat of the town government.
  • Underwood Corners -- A hamlet on Route 39, north of Steamburg.

Adjacent towns and areas

To the north is the Town of Napoli. Cold Spring shares its eastern border with the Towns of South Valley and Randolph. The east border is formed by the Towns of Salamanca and Red House. Warren County and McKean County in Pennsylvania are at the south town line.
