Conewango, New York

Conewango is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,732. The town is named after Conewango Creek, which flows through the town.

The Town of Conewango was incorporated in 1823 and is on the west border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.7 km² (36.2 mi²). 93.7 km² (36.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The west town line is the border of Chautauqua County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,732 people, 509 households, and 403 families residing in the town. The population density is 18.5/km² (47.9/mi²). There are 602 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.09% White, 0.17% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 509 households out of which 43.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.40 and the average family size is 3.86.

In the town the population is spread out with 40.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 107.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,491, and the median income for a family is $36,719. Males have a median income of $31,435 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,667. 23.6% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Axeville -- A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town on Route 40.
  • Clear Creek -- A hamlet on the west town line, southwest of Conewango village and south of Conewango Valley.
  • Conewango -- The hamlet of Conewango, a former station on the Erie Railroad, is in the northwest part of the town on Routes 62 and 241.
  • Conewango Creek -- The principal stream in the region, primarily in Chautauqua County. The name means "walking slowly."
  • Conewango Valley -- A hamlet on the west town line, west of Connewango village on Route 62.
  • East Randolph -- Part of the Village of East Randolph is in the southeast part of the town.
  • Pope -- A location in the center of the town on Route 241.

Adjacent towns and areas

The Town of Ellington in Chautauqua County is to the west. The Town of Randolph is to the south and the Town of Leon is to the north. The west border is formed with the Town of Napoli.
