Coulterville, Illinois

Coulterville is a village located in Randolph County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,230.

Geography

Coulterville is located at 38°11'3" North, 89°36'20" West (38.184172, -89.605496)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,230 people, 514 households, and 360 families residing in the village. The population density is 833.2/km² (2,174.4/mi²). There are 610 housing units at an average density of 413.2/km² (1,078.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.34% White, 1.87% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 514 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the village the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $26,776, and the median income for a family is $30,938. Males have a median income of $31,550 versus $19,113 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,994. 18.6% of the population and 12.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.4% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. ST. LOUIS, March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Peabody Energy announced today that its subsidiaries have acquired selected assets from Lexington Coal Company for $61 million in cash. Strong growth and long-term demand for Illinois Basin coal and increased investments in technologies allows Peabody to further expand its leadership position in the region. The transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings in 2006.

The acquired properties have significant synergies with other Peabody subsidiaries, enabling lower-cost mining and longer mine lives. Purchased assets include:

   * Approximately 10 million tons of reserves, a preparation plant, mining
     equipment and facilities near COULTERVILLE, Illinios  The newly formed
     Coulterville Coal Company may also access adjacent coal reserves owned
     by Peabody subsidiaries.  The mine is expected to begin production in
     2005 and will produce approximately 2 million tons per year when it
     reaches full capacity in 2006.  The mine will supply coal under a new
     agreement with Northern Indiana Public Service Company with terms that
     can be extended through 2015.
   * Approximately 40 million tons of coal reserves, a preparation plant,
     facilities, a shovel and other mobile mining equipment in Knox County,
     Ind.  The assets will be operated by Peabody subsidiary Black Beauty
     Coal Company's Miller Creek Mine, which is expected to access these
     surface reserves in 2006.
   * Approximately 20 million tons of reserves, a preparation plant,
     significant surface land reserves, a large dragline and other mobile
     mining equipment in Sullivan County, Ind.  The assets will be operated
     by Black Beauty's Farmersburg Mine.  Development of the operation is
     targeted for 2007.
