Davidson College is a highly-selective independent liberal arts college for 1,600 students in Davidson, North Carolina. Since its establishment in 1837, the college has graduated 23 Rhodes Scholars and is consistently ranked in the top ten liberal arts colleges in the country by U.S. News and World Report magazine.
The campus is located on Lake Norman close to Charlotte, North Carolina. Bobby Vagt is the president of Davidson and the school remains dedicated to providing a liberal arts education. It is lovingly referred to as the "Princeton of the South", which, in turn, is known to Davidson students as the "Davidson of the North". Woodrow Wilson attended Davidson College before moving to Princeton to continue his studies. Dean Rusk, the United States Secretary of State from 1961-1969, also attended school at Davidson.
Recently, the College's Board of Trustees voted to allow 20% of the board to be non-Christian. John Belk, of Belk's Department Store fame, and Stephen Smith resigned from the Board.
The Royal Shakespeare Company was in residency for most of the month of March 2005 at Davidson College, performing The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, as well as numerous educational activities, many of which are open to the general public. In 2006 and 2008, the RSC will not present plays; they will only conduct educational programs. Instead, in 2006, their artists will direct a Shakespeare play with Davidson students as actors, with the possibility that the play be presented in Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of the RSC and the birthplace of William Shakespeare They will next perform plays in Davidson's Duke Family Performance Hall in 2007.
Davidson's sports teams are known as the Wildcats and their colors are red and black. The Wildcats participate in NCAA's Division I (Division I-AA for football) and the Southern Conference for basketball. The Davidson College Wrestling Team was coached by three time NCAA Division I Campion T.J. Jaworsky, as is quickly gaining attention as it has posted its best season in 20 years.
