Denning, New York

Denning is a town located in Ulster County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 516. The name come from an early landowner, William Denning.

The Town of Denning is located in the western part of the county.

History

The Town of Denning was established in 1849. The region had been part of the Hardenburgh Patent granted to Johannes Hardenburgh in 1708. William Denning bought a tract of the original patent at a tax sale.

Geography

The town is in the Catskill Mountains and the Catskill State Park and borders Sullivan County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 272.6 km² (105.3 mi²). 272.4 km² (105.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 516 people, 215 households, and 124 families residing in the town. The population density is 1.9/km² (4.9/mi²). There are 517 housing units at an average density of 1.9/km² (4.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.93% White, 0.00% African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.91% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 215 households out of which 18.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 17.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,893, and the median income for a family is $50,729. Males have a median income of $37,750 versus $25,179 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,846. 12.0% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
