Dial-up access

es:acceso discado ja:ダイヤルアップ接続

Dial-up access is an inexpensive but relatively slow form of internet access in which the client uses a modem to dial the internet service provider's node, a dialup server type such as the PPP and TCP/IP protocols to establish a modem-to-modem link, which is then routed to the internet. It is now legacy technology in the advent of widely available broadband internet access in the Western World.

Dial-up modems typically have a maximum theoretical speed of 56kbps, although in most cases only up to 53kbps is possible due to overhead.

Dial-up connections usually have high latency that can be as high as 400ms or even more, which can make online gaming or video conferencing difficult, if not impossible.

Broadband connections (mostly via. cable and ADSL) are gradually replacing dial-up, however it still represents the majority of the connections to the internet. The reason for this gradual replacement is mostly because broadband connections usually have speeds which far exceed the capacity of dial-up, in some cases up to 15Mbps (15,000kbps). As more and more Internet services such as Flash, online gaming and streaming media require large amounts of bandwidth, dial-up connections are becoming more and more inadequate. However as the telephone point is a standard sight throughout the world, dial-up still remains useful to travellers and users in rural or remote areas where getting a broadband connection is impossible or expensive.
