Dodge County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 19,171. The county's county seat is Eastman, Georgia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,303 km² (503 mi²). 1,296 km² (500 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,171 people, 7,062 households, and 4,886 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 8,186 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.95% White, 29.40% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,062 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 15.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 105.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,607, and the median income for a family is $34,718. Males have a median income of $27,150 versus $20,683 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,468. 17.40% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.40% of those under the age of 18 and 21.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
