Dorchester County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 96,413. Its county seat is St. George6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,494 km² (577 mi²). 1,489 km² (575 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 96,413 people, 34,709 households, and 26,309 families residing in the county. The population density is 65/km² (168/mi²). There are 37,237 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (65/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.05% White, 25.08% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 34,709 households out of which 40.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 14.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.20% are non-families. 20.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.90% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 31.60% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,316, and the median income for a family is $50,177. Males have a median income of $35,423 versus $24,405 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,840. 9.70% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.40% of those under the age of 18 and 13.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
