Definition

solution of etheric oils in diluted ethanol (80-90%), containing 4-8% of perfume oils in the original Eau de Cologne by Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766), while the so-called perfumed Eau de Cologne contains 2-4%. EdC contains a mixture of citrus oils from lemon, orange, tangerine, bergamot, lime and grapefruit. Besides this, it can contain lavender, Neroli, rosemary, thyme, Petitgrain and jasmine oil. Eau de Toilette (EdT) and Eau de Parfum are to be distinguished from EdC through a higher percentage of perfume oils (4-7% and 7-12%).

History

At the beginning of the 18th century, Johann Maria Farina, the Italian perfumer (1685-1766), created a new fragrance which he named Eau de Cologne. This fragrance was something very new in contrast to the sultry, sweet fragrances in use at the time. With his Eau de Cologne Johann Maria Farina made Cologne world famous as a city of perfume in the 18th century. The people of Cologne honoured their celebrated citizen with a statue on the Town Hall, where you can still see it today. Today Eau de Cologne is known world-wide as a synonym for a light fragrance.
