Emperor He of Han China

From Academic Kids

Format of naming convention in English is under discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese).

Emperor He of Han China, ch. 漢和帝, py. hn h d, wg. Han Ho-ti, (79 - February 13 106) was an emperor of the Chinese Han Dynasty. He was the 4th emperor of the Eastern Han dynasty.

Emperor He was the son of Emperor Zhang. He ascended the throne at the age of 10 and reigned for 17 years. It was during He's reign that the Eastern Han began its slide into chaos. Internal strife between royal factions and eunuchs began when the Empress Dowager (Emperor He's mother) started appointing her own family members to important government posts. This led to open corruptions with endorsements from the Empress Dowager. In 92 AD, Emperor He was able to remedy the situation by removing the Empress Dowager and her gang with the aid of Zheng Zhong, a notoriously corrupt eunuch. This in turn gave the eunuchs a window of opportunity to start controlling affairs of state after Emperor He died in 106 AD. These trend would continued unabated for the next century contributing to the fall of the Han dynasty.

Although Emperor He's reign saw the turning point in Han politics, notable scientific progresses were made during this period including the invention of paper by Cai Lun in 105 AD.
