Fearrington, North Carolina

Fearrington is a census-designated place located in Chatham County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 903. The town's name is pronounced FAIR-ington, not FEAR-ington as the spelling might indicate.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 903 people, 506 households, and 357 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 151.6/km² (391.9/mi²). There are 533 housing units at an average density of 89.5/km² (231.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.79% White, 2.99% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. 0.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 506 households out of which 2.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.0% are married couples living together, 3.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.78 and the average family size is 2.08.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 2.1% under the age of 18, 0.8% from 18 to 24, 5.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 71.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 70 years. For every 100 females there are 79.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $66,198, and the median income for a family is $68,281. Males have a median income of $55,278 versus $28,068 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $41,000. 6.8% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
