Fujiko Fujio

Fujiko Fujio (藤子 不二雄, IPA: ) was the pen name of a Japanese cartoon artist (manga-ka) duo. In 1987, the duo broke up and became known as Fujiko F. Fujio and Fujiko Fujio (A):

History
Both Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko were born in Toyama, Japan (Hiroshi, 1933; Motoo, 1934). When Hiroshi was an elementary school student (1944), Motoo changed to the school where Hiroshi attended. They found themselves both liked drawing. After entering junior high school, they have got along although they went to different schools. During junior high school students (1946 – 1948), they were shocked by reading a comic book written by Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫), Shin-Takarajima (新宝島 [new treasure island]). They published manga coterie magazines on their own. They were impressed by Tezuka’s Lost World (ロスト ワールド) and Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and they wrote fan letters to them. When they became high school students, they started writing manga for the readers' columns of various publishers. They made their debut in Tenshi no Tama-chan (天使の玉ちゃん [an angel Tama-chan]). They earned money from this, so they visited Tezuka’s house in Takarazuka, Hyogo, before the graduation of the high schools.
Because both Hiroshi and Motoo are the eldest son, they decided to enter a company after graduating the high school (1952). Hiroshi entered a confectionery company, and Motoo entered a local newspaper publishing company. However, Hiroshi quickly quit the job because of injury. Motoo managed to be consistent with manga. While Motoo were working for the company, Hiroshi has taken a central role in contributing serial manga. At this time, their pen name was Ashizuka Fujio. In 1953 they achieved to publish in book form (UTOPIA: Saigo no Sekai Taisen; UTOPIA—最後の世界大戦 [Utopia: the last world war]). Next year (1954), they decided to go to Tokyo in order to become manga-ka. They made a group of manga-ka, called ‘Shin Manga-to’ (新漫画党 [new manga party]: the first period, 1954 – 1955; the second period, 1955 – ?), with Hiroo Terada (寺田ヒロオ) and others. At first, Hiroshi and Motoo lodged at Ryogoku; however, afterwards they moved to an apartment of Tokiwa-so (トキワ荘) where Hiroo lived.
They continued to draw manga day after day. A lot of editors of manga publishers visited and asked Fujiko Fujio to write serial manga. They became a popular manga-ka. However, they have lost their job during 1955 through the early 1956 because on the New Year of 1955 they returned home, and they relaxed so much that they missed the deadlines of nearly all manga. After this happening, they recovered trust by a miracle. In 1959, they left Tokiwa-so, and moved to Usagi-so (ウサギ荘), and then moved to Kawasaki, Yokohama. Hiroshi got marry in 1962 (at 28 years old). Next year, Fujiko Fujio received a prize for their manga from Shogakukan (http://www.shogakukan.co.jp/) (小学館).
Hiroshi and Motoo established Studio Zero (スタジオ・ゼロ; 1963 – 1971) with Shin’ichi Suzuki (鈴木伸一), Shotaro Ishinomori (石ノ森章太郎), Jiro Tsunoda (つのだじろう), Kiyoichi Tsunoda (角田喜代一), and one employee. Later Fujio Akatsuka (赤塚不二夫) joined, and the studio finally hired about 80 employees. They produced animated a lot of animated films, for example, Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム) of Osamu Tezuka was the first big enterprise. Fujiko Fujio revived a popular manga-ka again by Obake no Q-taro (1964). Both of them continued to write popular manga: Ninja Hattori-kun (Abiko 1964), Kaibutsu-kun (Abiko 1965), Parman (Fujimoto 1966), 21-emon (Fujimoto 1968), etc. Motoo got married in 1966 (at 32 years old).
Hiroshi started writing Doraemon (1970), and at the same time he started writing complete manga for young people. Doraemon at first did not attract children’s attention. However, three years later, Doraemon was animated on TV, and he was a popular character nationwide. Hiroshi was awarded for Doraemon by Nihon Manga-ka Association in 1973. On the other hand, Motoo wrote Black Salesman (later re-entitled Warau Salesman), autobiographical Manga-michi, etc. Motoo’s manga aims for the youngster rather than children while Hiroshi aimed for children.
Both Hiroshi and Motoo travelled around the world. Motoo wrote manga about Mao Zedong based on a trip to China. A lot of trips helped Hiroshi to write manga, especially T/P Bon (T・Pぼん; 1978).
In 1988, Hiroshi and Motoo put a stop to a pair, and since then, they have worked independently.
Since 1980, Hiroshi has written a series of long piece manga of Doraemon every year until he died. The manga series were animated on the screen, and every year the animated films were a gold mine for the movie industry. In 1989, Hiroshi won two awards for the Doraemon movie.
