Garrard County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 14,792. Its county seat is Lancaster6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 606 km² (234 mi²). 599 km² (231 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,792 people, 5,741 households, and 4,334 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (64/mi²). There are 6,414 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.75% White, 3.06% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,741 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.60% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.50% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,284, and the median income for a family is $41,250. Males have a median income of $30,989 versus $21,856 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,915. 14.70% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.10% of those under the age of 18 and 17.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
