Glades County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 10,576. Its county seat is Moore Haven, Florida6.

History

Glades County was created in 1921. It was named for the Florida Everglades.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,555 km² (986 mi²). 2,004 km² (774 mi²) of it is land and 551 km² (213 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,576 people, 3,852 households, and 2,765 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (14/mi²). There are 5,790 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.99% White, 10.53% Black or African American, 4.93% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 5.63% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 15.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,852 households out of which 25.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 121.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 125.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,774, and the median income for a family is $34,223. Males have a median income of $29,196 versus $20,987 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,338. 15.20% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.20% of those under the age of 18 and 11.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
