Golden, Colorado lies at the mouth of Clear Creek at the edge of the foothills of the Front Range. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and a suburb of the city of Denver. The Colorado School of Mines, Mount Falcon Park [1] (http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/falcon.htm) and the Coors Brewing Company are in Golden. It is also the birthplace of the Jolly Rancher, a candy bought by Hershey Foods Corporation. Famous western showman William F "Buffalo Bill" Cody is buried nearby on Lookout Mountain. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,159.

Golden is located at 39°44'49" North, 105°12'39" West (39.746837, -105.210911)Template:GR. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.3 km² (9.0 mi²). Golden was one of the first towns established in Colorado being on the way to the gold fields. It is about 15 miles from the center of Denver, and it is now regarded as a western suburb of Denver and part of the Denver Metropolitan Area. Golden was the territorial capital of Colorado. By 2025, it will be the endpoint of the West Corridor in Denver's FasTracks commuter rail network.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,159 people, 6,877 households, and 3,913 families residing in the city. The population density is 735.3/km² (1,905.1/mi²). There are 7,146 housing units at an average density of 306.2/km² (793.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.66% White, 1.03% Black or African American, 1.05% Native American, 2.99% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.98% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 6.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,877 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.1% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 16.9% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 120.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 118.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $49,115, and the median income for a family is $67,414. Males have a median income of $41,822 versus $32,413 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,257. 11.3% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
