Greenwood County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 66,271. Its county seat is Greenwood6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,199 km² (463 mi²). 1,180 km² (456 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.60% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 66,271 people, 25,729 households, and 17,753 families residing in the county. The population density is 56/km² (146/mi²). There are 28,243 housing units at an average density of 24/km² (62/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.57% White, 31.74% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,729 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.70% are married couples living together, 16.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,702, and the median income for a family is $42,022. Males have a median income of $30,759 versus $23,820 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,446. 14.20% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.70% of those under the age of 18 and 14.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
