Hana-Kimi

Hana-Kimi, known in Japan as Hanazakari no Kimitachi E (花ざかりの君たちへ For You in Full Blossoms) is a shōjo manga series written by Hisaya Nakajo (中条比紗也 Nakajo Hisaya).

The manga is serialized in Japan in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume (Flowers and Dreams), which comes out bi-weekly (5th and 20th of every month). This manga series has ended at volume 23 in August 2004. An artbook was released in May 2005 in addition to a character book.

Hana-Kimi is published in English under the name Hana-Kimi by Viz Communications.

Story

Mizuki Ashiya is a returnee that used to live in the United States. One day, she sees a track and field competition on TV, and becomes attracted by one of the competitors Izumi Sano doing the high jump. She instantly decides to become friends with him. She decides to go all the way to Japan and enter Oosaka Gakuen, the school that Sano goes to, which is actually a boys' school. However, she made up her mind to risk her gender and meet Sano. The two of them were put in the same room because his room has a vacancy spot. She is happy at first, but soon, she finds out that Sano has already quit high jump, and that he was nothing like she had imagined. Nobody knows that she is a girl there, and Sano doesn't know that she came all the way from the United States because she likes him.

After spending endless days together, they start to become very close. Mizuki starts to like Sano more and more. Sano finds out about Mizuki's gender under a special occasion. He pretends that he knows nothing so as not to get Mizuki into troubles. The situation becomes hard for Sano, whose feelings for Mizuki becomes very strong as well. On the other side, a classmate, Nakatsu, starts to like Mizuki. Nakatsu doesn't know about Mizuki's true identity, and are best friends with Sano. Later on, it turns into a weird love triangle.


Important characters

Names are in Western order, with the surname after the given name.

  • Mizuki Ashiya (芦屋瑞希 Ashiya Mizuki) - Main character of this manga. She's pretending to be a boy in order to attend the all-boys school that Sano attends.
  • Izumi Sano (佐野泉 Sano Izumi) - The guy that Mizuki Ashiya likes. He does high jump, and is very good at it. He finds out that Mizuki is a girl, but doesnt tell her he knows.
  • Shuichi Nakatsu (中津秀一 Nakatsu Shūichi) - He likes Mizuki, but doesnt know that she is really a girl. He got in the school with a football (soccer) scholarship, and is very good at it, of course. He has bleached blonde hair.
  • Hokuto Umeda (梅田北斗 Umeda Hokuto) - The doctor at the school's nurse office. Knows that Mizuki is a girl, and gives her advice.
  • Shin Sano (佐野森 Sano Izumi) - Sano's younger brother. Also does high jump.
  • Minami Nanba (難波南 Nanba Minami)- The head of the building where Sano and Mizuki stay. He's a nephew of Umeda-sensei, and is a year older that Mizuki.
  • Senri Chuuo (中央千里 Chuuō Senri)- A girly guy who seriously likes Nanba-sempai.

Trivia

Many major characters, including Nakatsu, Umeda, Nanba, etc are named after the train stations in Hisaya Nakajo's Hometown, Osaka, Japan.
