Hardy County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 12,669. Its county seat is Moorefield6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,514 km² (584 mi²). 1,511 km² (583 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,669 people, 5,204 households, and 3,564 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (22/mi²). There are 7,115 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.87% White, 1.93% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,204 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,846, and the median income for a family is $37,003. Males have a median income of $28,032 versus $18,798 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,859. 13.10% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.10% of those under the age of 18 and 20.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
