Hector, New York

Hector is a town located in Schuyler County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,854. The town is named after Hector, a Trojan hero in the Iliad.

The Town of Hector is located in the northeastern corner of the county.

History

The area was first settled around 1791. Originally it was called Hamburg. The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution.

Geography

The west town line is defined by Seneca Lake with Yates County, New York on the opposite shore. The north town line is the border of Seneca County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 291.3 km² (112.5 mi²). 265.4 km² (102.5 mi²) of it is land and 25.9 km² (10.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.88% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,854 people, 1,872 households, and 1,349 families residing in the town. The population density is 18.3/km² (47.4/mi²). There are 2,378 housing units at an average density of 9.0/km² (23.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.82% White, 0.56% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,872 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,380, and the median income for a family is $44,184. Males have a median income of $33,783 versus $21,648 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,601. 11.6% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • East Steamburg -- A location near the north town line on Route 1.
  • Finger Lakes National Forest -- A conservation area in the north-central part of the town.
  • Hector Post Office -- A hamlet east of Seneca Lake on Route 414.
  • Mecklenburg -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 6 and 79 near the eastern town line.
  • Perry City -- A hamlet near the eastern town line by Routes 227 and 228.
  • Searsburg -- A location in the northeast corner of the town on Route 1.
  • Smith Valley -- A hamlet on Route 228 in the southwest part of the town.
