Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah

In full, Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah (May 13, 1898 - September 1, 1960) was the second Yang di-Pertuan Agong (roughly equivalent to King) of Malaysia from April 1 to September 1, 1960, and fifth Sultan of Selangor.

He was the first son of Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah ibni Almarhum Raja Muda Musa (1898-1938) by Cik Puan Hasnah binti Pilong, a commoner wife. Named Tengku Alam Shah, he was not expected to succeed as he had two elder half-brothers.

However, at the instigation of the British Resident, T.S. Adams, the eldest half-brother Tengku Musa Eddin was dismissed as Raja Muda or Crown Prince in 1933 for alleged "misebehaviour". Tengku Alam Shah was instead proclaimed heir to the throne over the head of the other half-brother Tengku Badar.

Educated at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), Tengku Alam Shah was proclaimed Sultan in 1938 on the death of his father. However, between 1942 to 1945, when the Japanese ruled Malaya, he was dethroned and replaced by his eldest half-brother who became Sultan Musa Ghiatuddin Riayat Shah. The return of the British, however, brought Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah back to the throne, while ex-Sultan Musa was exiled to the Cocos Keeling Islands.

Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah was elected second Yang di-Pertuan Agong or Paramount Ruler of independent Malaya in April 1960 for a five year term, but died of a mysterious illness at Istana Tetamu in Kuala Lumpur on September 1, 1960 - the day of his coronation. He was buried at the Royal Mausoleum in Klang, Selangor.

The consort of Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah was Raja Jemaah binti Raja Ahmad, a member of a junior branch of the Selangor royal family, who served as Tengku Ampuan of Selangor and Raja Permaisuri Agong.
