Houlton CDP is a census-designated place within the town of Houlton in Aroostook County, Maine. The CDP is the central settlement of the town, and is defined to provide demographic statistics for that settlement, separated from the less populated areas of the town. As of the 2000 census, the settlement had a total population of 5,270.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the settlement has a total area of 19.9 km² (7.7 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 5,270 people, 2,203 households, and 1,310 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 265.3/km² (687.3/mi²). There are 2,472 housing units at an average density of 124.4 persons/km² (322.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the district is 95.48% White, 0.34% African American, 2.81% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,203 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 40.5% are non-families. 36.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.92.
Within the CDP the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.
The median income for a household is $25,162, and the median income for a family is $33,864. Males have a median income of $27,534 versus $21,778 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,875. 17.6% of the population and 13.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.3% are under the age of 18 and 16.0% are 65 or older.
