ISO 3166-2:AU is an ISO standard which defines geocodes: it is the subset of ISO 3166-2 which applies to Australia. It describes 6 States and 2 Territories. The first part is the ISO 3166-1 code AU for Australia, the second part of the code is based on the two or three character postal code.

Comparison with Postal Abbreviations
Australia also uses 4-digit numeric postcodes, such as Sydney NSW 2000.
Note these are different from the standard Australian postal abbreviations
