"Return of the Winners" by Vassili Saicenko (1912-1985), painted 1953.
Following the end of World War II, Red Army soldiers returned to their homes, and were hailed as heroes for crushing the "fascist hordes". The three soldiers in the foreground are all handsome, in uniform and armed, with the sun behind them making them almost glow. Because of the massive suffering the peoples of the Soviet Union endured during the war, soldiers were glorified as liberators, and Victory Day was an extremely important holiday. However, what this picture fails to show are the widows whose husbands never came back, and the mentally shattered soldiers afflicted with shell shock.
