Institute for Historical Review

The Institute for Historical Review (IHR) is an organization founded in the 1970s dedicated to historical revisionism. The IHR describes itself as a "non-ideological, non-political, and non-sectarian" organization. Critics have accused it of Anti-Semitism and having links to Neo-Nazi organizations, and assert that its primary focus is denying the commonly understood facts of the Nazi genocide of Jews and others.

The IHR publishes the Journal of Historical Review, which its critics accuse of being pseudo-scientific. When Noam Chomsky defended an author who wrote articles for the journal it led to great controversy, though Chomsky insists he was defending Dr. Robert Faurisson's right to free speech rather than any specific claim.

For a period of time, the IHR publicly offered a reward of $50,000 for verifiable "proof that gas chambers for the purpose of killing human beings existed at or in Auschwitz." This reward was subsequently paid to an Auschwitz survivor, Mel Mermelstein, who took the IHR to court for breach of contract for initially ignoring the plaintiff's evidence.

The Institute for Historical Review was originally founded by Willis Carto, the head of the now-defunct Liberty Lobby, who eventually lost control of the IHR in an internal takeover struggle. Liberty Lobby was best known for publishing a newspaper, The SPOTLIGHT, now reorganized as the American Free Press.

In recent published articles, volunteer organizations monitoring hate groups have stated that Holocaust-denial groups such as the Institute for Historical Review have been having difficulty finding supporters (and especially financial sponsors) in the United States. As a result, spokespersons for the IHR and other denial groups have been travelling to the Middle East in an attempt to forge closer ties with radical extremist groups there. IHR spokespersons have been reported to be meeting with Arabic figures who have been suspected to have ties to known terrorist groups. The current head of the IHR is Max Weber.
