Jim Hogg County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 5,281. Its county seat is Hebbronville6. Jim Hogg is named for James Stephen Hogg, a governor of Texas.

The racial makeup of the county is 80.44% White, 0.45% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 15.83% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. 89.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,815 households out of which 38.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 14.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.43.

In the county, the population is spread out with 31.60% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,833, and the median income for a family is $29,844. Males have a median income of $28,150 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,185. 25.90% of the population and 24.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.80% of those under the age of 18 and 30.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

2004 Election

This county was one of the few counties in Texas that voted for Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts over the incumbent George W. Bush. Kerry won by almost a 2-to-1 majority. He received 1,344 votes while Bush only received 712 votes.
