Kellogg is a city located in Jasper County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 606.

History

Kellogg was formed in September of 1865. The railroad reached the town in 1866 and it was designated a station on the line. The terminus of the railroad remained in Kellogg for some time, fueling the early growth of the town.

Today, one of Kellogg's most notable features is the five-building Kellogg Museum complex. Its main building is the former Simpson Hotel, constructed in 1909. The museum complex also boasts an original one-room schoolhouse and a country church.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²). 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Highway 224 forms Kellogg's eastern boundary. The North Skunk River runs southeasterly along the town's southern edge.

Kellogg's streets are labeled only by name, for example, "Adair St." House numbers originate at the southeast corner of the town and increase as one moves west or north. Kellogg's business district, including the Kellogg Museum complex, is located on High St.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 606 people, 248 households, and 169 families residing in the city. The population density is 649.9/km² (1,663.0/mi²). There are 282 housing units at an average density of 302.4/km² (773.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.35% White, 0.17% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 248 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,000, and the median income for a family is $44,083. Males have a median income of $34,722 versus $23,125 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,161. 6.0% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
