Leonardo (Ninja Turtle)

Leonardo (or "Leo"), a fictional character, is the unofficial leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His mask is blue (his favorite color), and his weapons are two katanas. He is named after Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Renaissance artist and inventor.

Leonardo takes after his sensei Splinter and takes ninjitsu very seriously. He is the closest to Splinter and spends most of his free time in practice and meditation. Leonardo has a strong sense of honor and he is a strict follower of the Bushido code.

Comic books

In the original comics by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, Leonardo finished off the Shredder by decapitation. Sometime in the original comics, he is ambushed by the Foot Clan and severely injured (This happens to Raphael in the middle of the first TMNT movie).

1987 cartoon

In the North American version of the 1987 cartoon show, Leonardo's voice actor is Cam Clarke (who also voiced Rocksteady). He is said to be the leader of the Turtles according to the 1987 cartoon show's theme song lyrics.

2003 cartoon

In the new Mirage and 4Kids 2003 cartoon show, Leonardo is the unofficial leader of the group and the most "spiritual" of them. Episodes that deals with Shredder and ninjitsu usually also focus on Leonardo. Leonardo is a more serious ninja turtle and has a stronger tie with Splinter in the 4Kids 2003 cartoon show than in the old Fred Wolf 1987 cartoon show. Also in the 2003 cartoon show, Raphael often quarrels with him.

In the 2003 cartoon show, he is voiced by Mike Sinterniklaas.

Video games

In the video games, Leonardo is the first turtle of choice. He is popular especially for beginners of the TMNT games. Like Nintendo's corporate mascot Mario, he portrayed as the well-balanced turtle among the turtles, having well-balanced and average stats. His range is rather long or average, but not as long as Donatello's range. He is not as slow as Donatello.
