Lincoln County, Arkansas

Lincoln County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 14,492. The county seat is Star City. Lincoln County was formed on March 28, 1871 and named for Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,482 km² (572 mi²). 1,454 km² (561 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,492 people, 4,265 households, and 3,130 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 4,955 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.88% White, 32.92% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,265 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 14.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 12.40% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 142.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 154.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,607, and the median income for a family is $35,408. Males have a median income of $28,890 versus $19,990 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,479. 19.50% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.60% of those under the age of 18 and 17.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
