Louisville, Georgia

Louisville is a city located in Jefferson County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,712. The city is the county seat of Jefferson CountyTemplate:GR. It is located southwest of Augusta on the Ogeechee River.

Louisville was laid out in 1786 as a prospective state capital of Georgia, and its state buildings were completed in 1795. It served as the state capital of Georgia from 1796 to 1806.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.3 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.64% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,712 people, 994 households, and 664 families residing in the city. The population density is 291.7/km² (755.5/mi²). There are 1,123 housing units at an average density of 120.8/km² (312.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 33.63% White, 65.93% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 994 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% are married couples living together, 27.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 77.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,883, and the median income for a family is $32,578. Males have a median income of $31,500 versus $16,921 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,028. 28.9% of the population and 23.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 51.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
