Lower Gwynedd Township is a township located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 10,422.
The town, part of Pennsylvania's Welsh Tract, is named after the county of Gwynedd in Wales. However, local residents pronounce the town's name (IPA), as if it were an English name.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 24.2 km² (9.4 mi²). 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.11% is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,422 people, 4,177 households, and 2,752 families residing in the township. The population density is 430.8/km² (1,115.9/mi²). There are 4,360 housing units at an average density of 180.2/km² (466.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 86.80% White, 7.78% African American, 0.08% Native American, 4.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,177 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 81.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.4 males.
