M-Base

M-Base is a form of modern jazz music which reached its peak in the mid-to-late-80s. Short for "macro-basic array of structured extemporization", the style built on the free funk of Ornette Coleman and made it even noisier and less predictable — even further removed from be-bop (itself the style against which Coleman rebelled during his career).
One of the main exponents of this style was the saxophonist Greg Osby — and indeed, it appears to be a saxophone-oriented offshoot of jazz. M-Base as a style is rarely performed these days, however the major players in the movement (Osby, Steve Coleman, Gary Thomas and singer Cassandra Wilson) are all still active in the recording community and their more recent performances still demonstrate a debt to this style. Additionally, many newer musicians in the "free jazz" arena are also heavily influenced by M-Base.
