Macon County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a member of the United States Senate from North Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 24,105. Its county seat is Tuskegee. It was the setting of the 1974 movie, Macon County Line.

History

Macon County was established on December 18, 1832.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,588 km² (613 mi²). 1,581 km² (611 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,105 people, 8,950 households, and 5,540 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 10,627 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 13.96% White, 84.64% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,950 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.70% are married couples living together, 25.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.10% are non-families. 33.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 16.90% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 85.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,180, and the median income for a family is $28,511. Males have a median income of $25,971 versus $21,773 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,714. 32.80% of the population and 26.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.80% of those under the age of 18 and 26.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Politics

Due to its mainly Black population and poverty, Macon county is one of, if not the most democratic county of the nation.
